The Dallas Opera has announced that not only will it share Tod Machover’s robot opera Death and the Powers in a global simulcast, it’ll present the thing with something called a “robot’s eye view.”
On Sunday, February 16 at 2 p.m., Powers, Machover’s look at technology, immortality and conscious, will pipe live from the Winspear to venues throughout the United States and Europe. Locally you’ll be able to follow along at the Perot Museum of Science. The Dallas Opera is currently in talks with groups in Silicon Valley, Stanford, throughout New York’s boroughs, Paris, London, Stockholm and others to pick up the broadcast.
Keeping in click with the show’s data-rich theme, those watching from secondary locations will be able to interact with the performance by controlling certain on-stage visual components via remote cellphone and tablet access.
It’s a technology made possible by the MIT Media Lab’s “Opera of the Future” program, which is totally a real thing that I promise we didn’t make up.
