Neutrals are strong and dependable; nothing’s changed. But as much as black is slimming, gray is chic and a nude shoe can lengthen the leg, there’s something to be said for the energy and attitude of vivid color. It can feel fairly daring to try to live in floral and avian hues instead of just blend in. You know, to let others actually see you. Colorimetry, the latest exhibition at W.A.A.S. Gallery, invites viewers to come experience, walk amongst, even discover color, via works by artists Neil Matthiessen (Saint Petersburg, Florida) and Dallas’ own Patricia Rodriguez. Matthiessen’s program-generated explosions of color are oversized installations that don’t restrain themselves to just one wall, while Rodriguez’s smaller paintings invite a closer look. Both artists’ works, while differing in process, employ organic shapes and a flow that conveys that shocking, yet positive depth-charge effect of color worn very well. Colorimetry opens Thursday with an artist talk from 6 to 7 p.m. and an opening reception to follow. The exhibition runs through August 9, by appointment, at 2722 Logan St. Visit waasgallery.com.
