Confession: I love fruitcake. Not those gooey bricks sold at the drugstore. I’d rather have a nice, traditional dark loaf…preferably soaked in brandy or, better yet, bourbon, like the ones those Trappist monks at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky make. The cliched adage about not judging a book by its cover couldn’t be truer when it comes to fruitcakes, because not every fruitcake is made the same. You never know what it’s really like till you take a bite. And that’s the moral of the holiday comedy Fruitcakes. Presented by Theatre Arlington, the play features a cast of oddball small-town eccentrics who, until you get to know them, appear, to outsiders, nuttier than, well, fruitcakes.
