This summer has been largely bereft of quality action flicks. We had our usual apocalyptic entries, the predictable superhero flicks, but nothing so far that just took our breath away. And it’s not like those are super hard to do, Hollywood. Good adventure stories have practically been around since the very beginnings of civilization. To fill that hole in our summer viewing plans — and to coincide with their “The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece” exhibition — our friends at the Dallas Museum of Art, 1717 N. Harwood St., will screen the original epic action/adventure story Ulysses at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Horchow Auditorium. Based on Homer’s The Odyssey, the film follows a hunky Kirk Douglas in the title role as he hikes up his toga, grits his teeth and heads home to his wife, Penelope, after the Trojan War. It takes him a decade to complete his travels (which were hindered by a series of hot women, mythic monsters and doomed sea travels). And of course, once he arrives, things are a little complex with the old lady. It’s a thrilling cinematic escapade chock-full of sandals and swords … and it’ll cost you way less than sitting in on the lame summer offerings currently in theaters, with tickets running $5 apiece.
