Anyone who has ever been to the State Fair of Texas knows that with all of the lights of the Midway, all of the fryers bubbling and all of the custodians gathering up visitors’ cast-off corn-dog sticks, it is far from functioning off-the-grid. But just across from the fairgrounds at The Reading Room, 3715 Parry Ave., is something dedicated to living life without wires. Janeil Engelstad’s Y’UTOPIAS: An Almanac (of sorts) of Sustainable and Off-The-Grid Living in Texas is, essentially, a collection of photographs, videos and portions of interviews from Engelstad’s time spent throughout Texas with those living sustainably and off-the-grid. Ranchers’ and farmers’ alternative methods and lives are exposed and celebrated in the exhibition, while weekly food demos provide visitors an opportunity to learn how the pros do it. Y’UTOPIAS is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays during the State Fair. Admission is free. Visit thereadingroom-dallas.blogspot.com.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 7. Continues through Oct. 21, 2012
