Way back in our late teens and early twenties, we all had that job that was a boring pain in the ass. And yet, we gave it our all, taking seriously the mundane tasks and associated workplace drama like it was all that mattered in the world. It was a simpler time, when living paycheck to paycheck was acceptable, and all we had to worry about was making rent and buying cat food. It’s that zeitgeist that’s captured so perfectly in Annie Baker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Flick, a comedic look at the lives of the employees of a shabby movie theater that’s home to the last 35mm projector in the state of Massachusetts. Baker’s play is built on the simplest of premises — three people trying to clean up an old theater — but it expands to fill three hours through methodical character building, potent silences and beautiful linguistic turns. Undermain Theatre (3200 Main St.) tackles this rumination on authenticity starting 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and running through Saturday, January 31. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; 8:15 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and matinees are 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays, January 17 and 31. Tickets are $10 to $30 at undermain.org
