Piece of Work, the 2010 documentary on Joan Rivers, is a little more heartbreaking than you’d imagine. In it, we see Rivers, in her mid-70s, still struggles to get work, to pay the bills, to stay relevant, and it’s that determination to stay in the spotlight and not keep her mouth shut that’s provided the comic a 50-year career. She was one of the first comedians to joke about abortion, had her own daytime talk show and was a working mother through much of her career. When she’s not ripping apart celebrities on E!’s Fashion Police, she’s riffing on the ups and downs of her life via stand-up, and she arrives at the Winspear Opera House (2403 Flora St.) to ease you back into the work week.
