Jack Black once played “Mr. S,” a wannabe rock star who transformed a classroom into band practice. He won’t be a part of this battle of the bands, but that didn’t stop kids from getting together to form a band and compete in the Texas High School Rock Off. Selected bands include (fans of bad band names, get ready to laugh) For Every Day, The Forest Fire, Jaci and Those Guys, Mr. Gepetto, Criminal Shift, Stanhope, Fly Away Hero, Rin Tin Tin, Amber Open Skies, Sidereal and the Seagoville High School Guitar Ensemble, all of whom will show off their skills to win $500 and the chance to open for a national act. Since it’s a high school rock off, all band members must be enrolled in 12th grade or lower during the time of performance. The First Annual Texas High School Rock Off will take place at 6 p.m. on January 8 at House of Blues, 2200 N. Lamar St. Tickets range from $8 to $15. For more information, go to hob.com.
