Mary Roach is one of those rare nonfiction writers with a sense of humor. Among all the gloom and doom cluttering the nonfiction section these days, Mary Roach writes books about dead people that are uproarious. Roach’s Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers is a witty book about what happens to bodies donated to science. It’s thoroughly researched and yet intently sly, like Erma Bombeck does CSI. Her newest book, Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife, takes a similarly quirky approach while examining the concept of the soul and what happens to it when we die. For writers who’d like to hear how she crafts her work and for fans who’d just like to hear her speak, Roach will present at UNT’s Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
