After a gluttonous weekend of stuffing ourselves with hot dogs, potato salad and high fructose corn syrup, we could all use a gentle reality check on what we actually put into our bodies. Commentaries on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s policies on pharmaceuticals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their effects can be found in the most unexpected places. For example at Liliana Bloch Gallery’s (2919 Commerce St.) group show Side Affect, which opens this Saturday. The work of 11 artists, including Waddy Armstrong, Du Chau and Vince Jones, will allude to the evolving regulatory practices of the FDA since its inception in 1892. Make it a date night with dinner afterward — organic, fair-trade recommended. The free opening reception is 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The exhibition will be on view through September 7.
