There are few things that make you feel more cultured than going to see some Shakespeare. I’m generally pretty happy just to get out of the house for a showing of Bridesmaids or to commandeer a jukebox with repeats of Joy Division, because those are things I can afford and they make me happy. But if I can put on a fancy dress, sit in a theater, and hear actors bandy about words like “usurp” or “beget” or “furze” for a few hours, then I feel like I’ve risen above my domestic travails for a little while and am part of some larger cultural experience. And with dialogue like “”A pox o’ your throat, you bawling, blasphemous, incharitable dog!” The Tempest is a nice diversion with its tragicomic elements and emphasis on the mystical. Most important, though, the Dallas Theater Center’s production of the play gives you a cultural shot in the arm for the low, low price of $25, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Dallas Theater Center’s Project Discovery. This is cheap enough for us plebeians to emerge from our usual matinee showings, get dolled up and experience Shakespeare in all his dramatic glory at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theater in the AT&T Performing Arts Center, 2403 Flora St. Catch a performance at 8 p.m. Friday or visit dallastheatercenter.org for additional performances through October 9.
Thursdays-Sundays; Sept. 13-14; Tuesdays, Wednesdays. Starts: Sept. 9. Continues through Oct. 9, 2011
