Retired Bishop John Shelby Spong is one of the most controversial figures in all of Christianity, a liberal theologian who believes Christianity must evolve to survive, which means letting go of many beliefs contradicted by the findings of modern science. He’s also one of the foremost proponents of gay rights within the Episcopal Church (he ordained its first openly gay male priest, Robert Williams, in 1989). Monday he’ll offer a presentation based on his latest book, The Sins of Scripture, at Unity Church of Dallas, 6525 Forest Lane. The event caps off a weekend of Spong events. Friday and Saturday night Unity Church offers performances of A Pebble in My Shoe: The Life & Times of John Shelby Spong; Bishop Spong will also lead Sunday services at the Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road.
