Photographer and printer Dan Burkholder of New York has been combining new and old photographic techniques since embracing digital photography in the early 1990s, the “Paleolithic era in digital imaging” as Burkholder jokes. First published in 1995, his award-winning book Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing paved the way for countless photographers and artists who sought to combine the precision of digital imaging with the beauty of traditional photographic prints, like his dreamy prints of platinum and palladium over 24 karat gold leaf on acid-free vellum. His newest book, iPhone Artistry, due out this month, continues the trend of combining old and new techniques (and, in this case, some fancy new apps), but you don’t have to wait for Burkholder’s book to come out to see his work. Sun to Moon Gallery, 1515 Levee St., presents a new exhibition, Dan Burkholder: Precious Metals & Pigments, through October 15. Admission is free.
