No marriage is exempt from some level of strife, including the ones between Catholic nuns and the Big J.C. himself. Hollywood has long mined nunneries for drama (and horror and comedy), and that’s because the sisters have a lotta story to tell. For instance, Saint Bernadette, whose mean-as-a-snake mother superior wouldn’t believe she had visions of the Virgin Mary until she died of an excruciating bone disease and was all “told you so.” Or Sister Mary of The Bells of St. Mary, who ran interference for bullied kids and was rewarded with a nasty case of tuberculosis. On the other end of the spectrum are your Sister Acts and your horror films, but whatever genre you like there’s surely an intriguing nun story to be found. The Divine Sister takes all those well-worn formulas and combines them into one campy, hilarious comedy that explores just about any nun maxim you can think of. Presented by the Uptown Players and starring the drag-tastic Coy Covington as a mother superior with a knack for all things madcap, the play runs Friday through July 29, with performances at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
