We have a soft spot in our heart for the aspiring artist trying to make a name for himself in this digital, Photoshopped world. It’s hard out there when galleries and museums are more interested in filling their spaces with works from famed artists rather than anonymous newbies, but some museums and galleries go against the grain, choosing to nurture young talent through residency programs and to display their art proudly alongside the works of esteemed colleagues. The Core Residency Exhibition Program at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston does just that by offering free studio space, mentorship from artists and critics and even free health insurance to a select few artists. Now Core artists will have an even broader audience as their works travel to Dallas for Material Traces: Selections from Core 2011. First-year residents Kelly Sears, Lourdes Correa-Carlo and Nick Barbee are among the artists whose works will be on display at McKinney Avenue Contemporary through July 9.
