For 11 years, Carol Burnett and friends would perform skits, sing and dance and crack each other up on TV’s Carol Burnett Show. Perhaps the best part of the hour-long variety show was the first few minutes in which Carol would take unscripted questions from the studio audience. Some wanted a hug or a song, while others seemed a bit confused (“Is this a repeat show?”). This impromptu and intimate audience repartee is the basis for her new tour: Laughter and Reflection With Carol Burnett: A Conversation With Carol Where the Audience Asks the Questions. “I love the spontaneity of these evenings,” says the San Antonio-born comedienne. “I never know what anybody is going to say or do or ask.” This kind of improvisation offers a unique experience each night of the tour and an opportunity to learn more about the life of a living legend. After a request for her famous “Tarzan yell,” an audience in Hawaii learned that the signature yodel once saved the comedienne while shopping. Caught without ID, she used it to convince a department store to take her check. My signature signature won’t even do that.
