Frank Hejl, aside from having an almost-impossible-to-know-how-to-pronounce-right last name, is poised for comedy success. The 24-year-old is already producing and hosting his own semi-regular comedy showcase, Mix Tapes and Baby Fights, at Denton’s Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. As Hejl puts it, “I started Mix Tapes and Baby Fights as a way for aspiring comics who don’t feed into the tired comedic format to have a different venue to perform at rather than the typical shitty comedy clubs.” The Lakewood Theater’s new Arcade Bar offers another venue for Hejl and other local up-and-comers with its First Annual Holiday Comedy Showcase. Hejl joins (among others) Blair Rowan and Chris Gardner of The Cooperation Corporation, an organization that takes a satirical piss on “consumer whoredom and shameless marketing.” The lineup also includes Bryce Richardson, Jamie Lee and Corey Sutton. Together their (hopefully) laughable performances (and your copious drinking) benefit Operation Kindness Animal Shelter. The First Annual Holiday Comedy Showcase takes place 9:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Lakewood Theater, 1825 Abrams Parkway. Admission is free. Call 214-373-8000 or visit lakewoodtheater.com.
