Sure, I love the Olympics. But you know what I love more? The phrase “great whites breaching.” There is no television programming stretch more glorious than Discovery Channel’s celebration of cartilaginous, chompy fish. Shark Week is a sea geek’s fantasy, filled with stories about electro-magnetic field facial receptors, the hunting and mating patterns of hammerheads and lots and lots of “attack scene reenactments.” In the end, even those who got munched appreciate their assailants’ majesty.
The fad has spread globally, spawning tributes as temporary as crochet shark koozies and remote-controlled helium blimps, to very permanent ones, like tattoos. We’ve trolled the interwebs around and caught our 10 favorites.
