Our perception of Australia cinema would undoubtedly be much different if Ted Kotcheff’s film Wake in Fright (previously known as Outback) had received better distribution. Restored and dubbed a Cannes Classic, Wake in Fright brought disturbing human horror to the forefront, filled with a drunken Outback psychopathic takedown of a schoolteacher through booze, violence and real, live kangaroo murder. A lost film for almost 20 years, Wake in Fright has finally been restored and re-released, and now those cinephiles at the Texas Theatre will air it out for one weekend only. Check out what Nick Cave refers to as the best and most terrifying film about Australia in existence, Friday and Saturday at the always rockin’ Texas Theatre, 231 W.
