I’ve made an effort to avoid Toddlers and Tiaras, that horrifying TLC show that follows pageant moms and the unfortunate children through whom they live vicariously by slathering them with makeup, dressing them like hookers and parading them out to preen in front of judges. From the commercials and brief glimpses I’ve inadvertently caught, it seems to involve sexualizing girls who in some cases are only a couple years removed from potty-training. Even with teenagers, such gratuitous objectification seems like it would be scarring. But if a grown man wants to transform himself to herself with an elegant dress, show off some hidden talent (excluding those involving fire, water or glitter, per contest rules) and shine in an interview, that sounds like a pageant that would be a drag in the best possible way. Preliminaries for the title of Miss Gay USofA began May 20 at the Round-Up Saloon, with Thursday as the final night there. The winner will be crowned Friday, with the event beginning at 7 p.m., at the Palladium Ballroom, 1135 S. Lamar St. Cross your fingers for Miss Gay Texas USofA winner Lawanda Jackson (or first alternate Adeycia Iman). Tickets ($40 to $75) and more information are at usofa.org.
