Just in time for the release of The Ten comes another chance to see director David Wain’s first feature, Wet Hot American Summer, on the big screen. You might know Wain and co-writer Michael Showalter from The State, MTV’s groundbreaking sketch comedy show of the early nineties. In fact, you may know much of Wet Hot‘s cast as the minds behind The State‘s offbeat offshoots like Viva Variety, Stella, Reno 911! and the aforementioned The Ten, in which Wain and crew weave 10 short stories (each based on one of the Bible’s commandments) into a warm blanket of weird and irreverent comedy.
In contrast, Wet Hot American Summer follows a singular story line that gets directly to the point. It’s the last day of camp in the summer of 1981 and a group of counselors must resolve romantic feelings, prepare for the talent show, clean up the goat shit, bathe a reluctant camper, “get McKinley laid!”, workout personal demons and stop a hunk of space junk from killing everyone. Will they learn a life lesson from a talking can of vegetables? You bet. Don’t even think of missing Wet Hot American Summer at midnight Friday and Saturday at the Inwood Theatre, 5458 W.
