Little has changed over the years when it comes to the thriller genre. A clueless everyman protagonist is pursued by daunting enemies for some unknown reason and is forced to work beyond his means in order to survive. It’s the basic premise of dozens of such films, from Marathon Man to the Bourne Trilogy. But long before these flicks made it to the silver screen, the master of suspense perfected the genre. Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest is a Cold War classic starring the rugged Cary Grant as Roger Thornhill, a Mad Men-esque advertising executive who is mistaken for a wanted man and is forced to run for his life, not knowing who is pursuing him or why. This archetype of the genre returns to the big screen in the next installment of the Grapevine Palace Theatre’s First Friday Film Series. The series touches on classics from all genres, from Bollywood to Westerns and, of course, suspense. North by Northwest returns to the big screen once more at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the historic Palace Theatre, 300 S. Main St. in Grapevine. Tickets are $5.
