Maybe your make believe friend was two inches tall and wore a jaunty hat. Or maybe there wasn’t any one person. Perhaps you lived within many magical, imagined moments a day. Kids create amazing worlds for themselves – especially during strained times – in their heads. And sometimes, those kids can continue to stretch that imagination into adulthood not only for their own use, but also for an audience. Alejandro Jodorowsky’s first film in 23 years, The Dance of Reality (La danza de la realidad), examines his own autobiographical tale in Tocopilla, Chile, albeit heavily seasoned with myths and metaphoric imagery (not a shock to fans of his films The Holy Mountain and El Topo). It’s a creation that, through the trials of a father-son saga, further cements his view that one’s reality can never be objective. While Jodorowsky wasn’t looking for a box office smash, it did receive a standing ovation at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. See if you stand for his version of reality when the Texas Theatre, 231 W.
