If you’ve never heard of American composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold, you’re probably not alone. The early 20th century composer made a name for himself writing film scores, but he also composed some gorgeous dramatic music for the stage, including one very creepy opera. Die tote Stadt, opening at The Dallas Opera at 7:30 p.m. Friday and running through April 6, tells the story of Paul, a grief-stricken widower obsessed with his dead wife and a young woman who bears a striking resemblance to her. Korngold’s music is luscious and rich and he understands drama — qualities that when combined make for compelling opera. Add to that a creepy, ghost-filled tale of obsessive love and murder and the impressive cast The Dallas Opera has assembled, and this production is worth your time and money. All performances are at the Winspear Opera House, 2403 Flora St. Tickets range from $19 to $159 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 214-443-1000 or at dallasopera.org.
