There’s a little freak in all of us — and not, like, the American Horror Story kind. We all have a part that’s unsettled, that wants more, that burns for a crazy experience. Some of us manage to tame that flame, while others let their freak flag fly. Why Things Burn, a play by writer Rick Krause, examines what it means to have smoldering aspirations, and explores where they come from, in his noir-ish, inventive tale of a group of out-of-work circus performers on the margins of early ’50s Los Angeles society. The 25-year-old play had never been fully staged until local actor and creative jack-of-all-trades Van Quattro revived it via a Kickstarter last fall; now the piece, which blends comedy with elements you’d find in a James Ellroy novel, sees its Southwestern premiere at Margo Jones Theatre (1121 First Ave.) beginning Friday and continuing until January 24. Shows are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays with an additional performance 7 p.m. Monday, January 19. Tickets are $15 at whythingsburn.bpt.me.
