The Beach Boys get all the credit for expanding the horizons of pop music, and rightfully so, given their experimental and innovative sounds. But on the opposite coast, Franki Valli, Bob Gauido, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi were nothing to sniff at: their band, The Four Seasons, nailed a distinctive blend of harmonic pop, R&B, doo-wop and rock that almost defied description. It was soft rock enough not to ruffle too many feathers, but the sound was unique enough that it piqued the ears of Motown execs, and soon the New Jersey-ites were something big. Their rise to the top is chronicled in Jersey Boys, the Tony-award winning musical that comes with a built-in soundtrack and a documentary-style narrative, making it clear that despite the slick hair-dos and perfect harmonies, these weren’t your average clean-cut pop stars. In fact, their exploits make The Beach Boys drug-fueled drama look downright sweet. Get the whole story as the musical starts its run at the Bass Performance Hall, 525 Commerce St. in Fort Worth, Tuesday. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays until June 15; 7 p.m. Sunday, June 8; 1:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $38 to $115.50; visit tickets.basshall.com to purchase.
