A photograph only has a flat page on which to work its mystery. How good must a photograph be to grab our attention and change the world then? What must be captured on paper to change public perception or policy? Whatever that mysterious “it” is, it seems that every year there is at least one, just like there is that one song used in senior proms nationwide. Will the one photograph come from the Congo this year? “Where?” you ask. Exactly. To shed light on the suffering of the Congolese people in war that remains virtually invisible to the outside world, five photographers from the VII Photo Agency traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2005 with the organization Doctors Without Borders. They came back with black-and-white and color photographs, some dealing more in line and shape but always having a human element in them—whether a person’s visage or a depiction of a living condition. Seeing is believing while Democratic Republic of the Congo: The Forgotten War is on display at the Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther Drive, through September 29.
