One day, Sandra Fluke was a law school graduate with interests in reproductive rights and domestic violence — and the next day Rush Limbaugh publicly branded her with a big ole scarlet letter for making a speech before House Democrats supporting the Affordable Care Act. Fluke talked to the House about how access to contraception was essentially a public-health issue, and for her efforts, the always gracious Rush Limbaugh called her a slut. The upshot to this very personal attack was that Fluke took the opportunity to turn the controversy into a national conversation about women’s health, reproductive rights and the role the media play in gender disparity. Fluke will make a stop in Dallas to present “Economics and Equality: How Obstacles to Women’s Health Care Affect Us All,” followed by a panel discussion from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday. The event, which is sponsored by the SMU’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program, is free and open to the public, and takes place on the third floor of Dallas Hall’s McCord Auditorium at 3225 University Blvd. on the SMU campus.
