If you attended Artopia on December 3, you may have stopped first at the Barry Whistler Gallery reception for a little pregame celebration. If you missed out, you still can celebrate the opening of three incredible exhibitions. Featuring solo shows by 2011 MasterMinds nominee Lawrence Lee and sculptor Jonathon Cross, the exhibition also presents Bliss, a group collection by 12 local artists, inspired by the success of the gallery’s past Christmas shows. Creating narrative through drawings, Lee deepens his characters’ storylines and adds a host of new faces in his fourth solo show, Boksers (the Afrikaans translation of “boxers”). Unexpected and multidimensional, his drawings excite with such eclectic movement that it’s hard to believe they are conjured through mere graphite and ink. Cross’ Plane Forms, on the other hand, contains small, ceramic planters built with the hand of a master architect; his hard, sharp geometric shapes expertly compliment the spiny cacti and succulents that are housed in his ceramics. You really have to see Cross’ designs to believe that a planter can say so much.
