From Hillary’s recent self-deprecating sniper-fire jokes to McCain’s farcical announcement on The Daily Show that The Office‘s Dwight Schrute would be his running mate to Obama’s, um, dancing on Ellen, presidential candidates are aware of the important role silliness and charade play on the tollway to the Oval Office. In his new book A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House: Humor, Blunders and Other Oddities from the Presidential Campaign Trail, Charles Osgood has assembled a bevy of zingers, quips and one-liners from past presidential elections. Hosting CBS News Sunday Morning since 1994, the bow-tied broadcast journalist and author has won numerous Peabody Awards and Emmys. And this week, metroplexers have two opportunities to hear him speak for free. Thursday at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano at 7:30 p.m. and Friday at Highland Park United Methodist Church at 10 a.m., Osgood will share humorous presidential stories, recite poetry and even sing some political ditties. Released last Tuesday, copies of his newest book will be available for purchase and signing at both events. For information, call 469-385-1815 for Thursday’s event or 214-523-2270 for Friday’s.
