Oh, Broadway—what other entertainment entity can combine the all-American drama of baseball, the cheesy thrill of overproduced song and dance numbers, and the creepy Satanic fantasy of Faust? You’ll find all of this in Damn Yankees, perhaps the quintessential Broadway musical, which kicks off a local run as the second installment of the Richardson Summer Musicals Thursday through July 29. Yankees follows the tale of the lowly Washington Senators and their über-fan Joe Boyd, who sells his soul to the devil so that the Sins…er, Sens, can finally beat the New York Yankees and win the pennant. Of course, when you make a deal with the devil, things often go awry, and they do, providing plenty of excuses for the cast to break into a number of famous songs. It may sound cheesy, but considering the current fate of our Texas Rangers (who used to be the Washington Senators, let’s not forget), it’s the best baseball action you’ll see this season.
