Ever imagine what the voice of God might sound like? I bet it sounds like James Earl Jones—booming but comforting and always unmistakable. Yet Jones’ eloquent baritone belies the fact that as a child he stuttered so badly he refused to speak at all. That is, until a teacher encouraged him to write and recite poetry. Not only did he discover he could speak well, he discovered his passion to perform. In his memoir, Voices and Silences, Jones recounts being reared by his grandparents after being abandoned by his actor father. He tells the struggles of coming of age as a youth of multiracial descent and his rise to both Broadway and big-screen fame. The University of Michigan graduate is best-known as the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in The Lion King, but his endless list of character roles and voice-over work can be seen and heard while perusing the channels any day of the week. You can see—and hear—James Earl Jones at 7 p.m. Thursday during the Dallas Public Library’s AuthorSpeak Series, where he will discuss and sign Voices and Silences. The J.
