If the rumors are to be believed, the incidences of fainting during readings of the Chuck Palahniuk short story “Guts” are now up to 73. Some folks, it seems, just can’t handle their Chuck. Pre-signed copies of his newest transgressive tour de force Damned — a smirking homage to Young Adult fiction involving a veritable “Breakfast Club” of teen characters who wake up, quite literally, in hell — will be available for purchase, and Palahniuk will speak about his prolific career. Charged as a “nihilist,” Palahniuk suggests that he is, instead, simply interested in characters who stand outside of mainstream culture and who find a way to subvert it, usually through aggression and force.
