You might buy into Scarborough Renaissance Festival’s reputation as a haven for cat ladies, polyamorous-leaning couples and corset enthusiasts, but then you’d be missing out on the big picture. And that picture is so epically medieval, so soaked in mead and turkey grease, so full of swashbuckling and facial hair and heaving bosoms that you’d be a total nut to skip the short drive to Waxahachie and indulge in the joys of the late Middle Ages. This year’s paean to all things feudal is a seven-week celebration of the Renaissance, packing in a slew of activities and exhibitions that really capture how much fun life could be before the advent of antibiotics. Check out jugglers, storytellers and swordfights throughout your visit. Make your way to turtle races and a rat circus (!). Gnaw on a turkey leg as you navigate lanes of mermaid lagoons and heathen pirates. Spend some time at thee shoppes and send the kids through the Dungeon of Yorkshire Tower to scare ’em straight. So, you’re totally going to Scarborough Faire, right? Get a one-day ticket for $20 ($10 for kids ages 5 to 12 and free for the little ones) at srfestival.com and head south to 2511 F.M. 66. Gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
