Helen Altman is an artist. Her preferred medium? Oh, just fire. Fire? That’s right. Using a method she refers to as “torch drawing”, the Tuscaloosa native uses a controlled flame on paper to create stunning images of lush landscapes, frolicking birds and charging steeds. Talley Dunn Gallery is featuring over a hundred of Altman’s works. Her expansive collection of paintings, wire creations and other mixed-media works will serve as appetizers to the main course: Altman’s impressive and unique torch paintings. Ever the activist, Altman often uses her torch paintings to draw attention to the land ravaged by fires in the West. Whether her works serve as an environmental statement or just a treat for the eyes, you’d don’t want to miss this exhibition. Helen Altman: Firewalls is on exhibit at the Talley Dunn Gallery (5020 Tracy Street) through August 27. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
