You know what sucks about the State Fair? OK, nothing. Nothing at all. Except that it doesn’t start for more than a month. But fortunately, our good friends in the northern hamlet of Denton can patch up the fried hors d’oeuvre-sized holes in our hearts — at least for a nine-day stretch — as we struggle through to late September. The North Texas Fair and Rodeo is a bit smaller, but like most things in Denton, it’s got serious moxie. The nightly rodeo, for example, gets the dirt flying in all the right ways and at 7:30 p.m. Monday, the Invitational Ranch Rodeo pits area ropers against each other in categories like “Team Doctoring,” “Team Sorting” and, of course, bronc riding. There’ll be a carnival with rides that’ll make your cotton-candy-fed tummy lurch in all the right ways, plus live music nightly. Monday’s featured entertainer is Cody Jinks — who claims to be so country he was conceived in a honky-tonk — at 9:30 p.m. The fair is open from 6 p.m. until midnight daily through Saturday, August 24, with extended hours on weekends from 1 p.m. until midnight. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at ntfair.com.
