Robert Mapplethorpe was the flashpoint. As a young artist, he brought homoerotic photography into the world of high art, exposing an edgy underworld of gay sex and drugs that reigned in the New York City of the ’70s and ’80s. But Mapplethorpe may not have reached such heights were it not for Sam Wagstaff, a handsome, blue-blooded museum curator 25 years his senior. Wagstaff became Mapplethorpe’s lover and, through his patronage, influential in supporting a new era of photographic art. Black White + Gray tells the less well-known story of Wagstaff–as both artistic visionary and ardent, obsessive lover–through the recollections of close friends (among them, rocker Patti Smith) and voices from the fine art world.
