Betty Friedan opened the proverbial can of worms when she introduced the phrase “feminine mystique” into the vernacular. Friedan’s diagnosis for bored, unsatisfied housewives–“the problem that has no name”–led to an ongoing recovery both spiritual and economic. But the question “What does it mean to be a woman?” persists. Paint slinger Carolyn Schlam, who hails from New Mexico, expresses the core of femininity through abstract art. She favors glass, collage and paint to shape elongated, bottom-heavy feminine forms. Her exhibit, Full Exposure: The Heart of the Feminine, opens Saturday and runs through June 24 at The Cameron Gallery, 1414 Dragon St. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit thecamerongallery.com.
Mondays-Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Starts: May 21. Continues through June 24, 2011
