We at the Observer specialize in a few, key areas — writing the words you want to read, digging up interesting stories and spotlighting the people who influence our city. Also, and possibly most important: We throw GIANT parties.
This Saturday (January 26) is Artopia, one of our biggest of the year — imagine a complete saturation in aesthetic creativity including fashion, street art, performance, music, food and booze, delicious booze.
Running from 8 to 11 p.m. (with an afterparty at that chic new club LeVu), we’re bringing you four runway shows by local designers Lucy Dang, Shemara Couture, Tre’ LaVoux and La’Daska Mechelle; live painting by JMR, who’ll be knocking out the final touches of an onsite mural; decadent food sampling with Gordon Biersch, Pure Delite Cupcakes, East Hampton Sandwich Co., the Seafood Shack, Company Cafe, Red Mango Frozen Yogurt & Smoothies, Primebar and Elizabeth’s Cakes; DJs Wanz Dover and Redeye; live music by ISHI — and my favorite part of the night, a special gallery showcase by our 2013 Mastermind Winners.
When news happens, Dallas Observer is there —
Your support strengthens our coverage.
We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If the Dallas Observer matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.
Now, take all of that, wrap it in a velvet cape and drop it smack into the middle of the Dallas Contemporary’s latest exhibition — Victory, a swank detailing of lowrider culture created by Chicago artist DZINE. This show is insane: There are actual tricked-out lowriders flipped up and dropped down throughout the gallery; a giant fuck-off gold necklace hangs mounted on the back wall; and oversized chandeliers with redwood-grade circumferences are lowered to illuminate collections of customized trophies. Even the Contemporary’s interior walls have been handpainted and meticulously etched, giving the entire installation a feeling of plush grandeur.
Yeah, it’s going to be that kind of party.
Get excited, and snag a ticket. Then pop back by Mixmaster throughout the week; we’ll release more details about the event, like the names of our 2013 Mastermind winners, and more a deeper look at our local muralist and fashion designers.
