Of all the movies about a carpenter from another world being shown around the holidays, The Day the Earth Stood Still is perhaps the most relevant to our current global political climate. OK, so it’s not about an actual carpenter, but someone who adopts the name Carpenter. The 1951 film deals with the issue of man’s inability to get along with his fellow man. In the movie, aliens show up and give us earthlings the choice of living peacefully or being wiped out, which, let’s face it, is probably what it would take to get us all on the same page. The alien messenger gets shot, and a giant robot makes all the guns disappear with a laser-beam eye-weapon thing. So I guess we either need to all get along or we need to get laser eyes and destroy all the weapons. Or we could all get robots, but that’s probably going to happen in the future anyway, right?
