The Island of Misfit Toys, per the beloved Rankin/Bass cartoon “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”, hits way close to home for anyone who has ever found themselves on the fringes of “normal” society. Whether you just didn’t dress in an expected manner (like the spotted elephant), didn’t play into rigid gender roles (pink firetruck), or were just a little too emotionally fragile for the in-crowd (Dolly), at least you have your fellow outcasts to lean on, to stoke your creativity, and to have a drink with. The art world’s own misfit toys–the poets–understand this keenly: they’re not quite considered writers, and not melodic enough to be musicians. Their art is put together with words and rhythms, not color and shape—and so they’re cast off to the peripheries of culture, banding together to commandeer open mic nights and make their voices heard. Locally, Pandora’s Box Poetry Showcases has done a stellar job of rounding up these misfits locally and displaying their talents in monthly events—including Island of Misfit Toys: A Christmas Reading at 8 p.m. Monday.
