Once in blue moon, a much-hyped film about dance reinvigorates interest in the art. A recent example, Black Swan, explores the dark underbelly of professional dancing, and it’s probably (hopefully?)more fiction than fact. Let’s Dance!, a film festival at The Modern, is a collection of short films, documentaries and feature flicks, and explores such dance-related subjects from hula hoops to tightrope dancing. Short films screen in groups beginning at 6 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. At 5 p.m. Saturday, settle in to watch The Company, the 2003 Robert Altman ballet flick starring Neve Campbell and The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Campbell was a dancer as a child and young adult, but like Natalie Portman in Black Swan, she trained extensively to master her technique for film. Sunday afternoon at 2 and 4 p.m., there’s Tango, a movie about a lovelorn guy who falls in love with a dancer while making a film about Argentine tango. The film festival coincides with the Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth Dance Exchange; performances are scheduled around movie times. The Modern Film Fest: Let’s Dance! continues July 15 through 17 at The Modern Art Museum, 3200 Darnell St., Fort Worth. General admission tickets are $8.50. For more information visit themodern.org.
