Doud Davis doesn’t really beat around the bush in his Critic’s Pick preview of Joanna Newsom‘s performance tonight at the Granada Theater, as seen in last week’s paper. He calls her a member of the “musician elite” and praises her “virtuosic playing skills” and “restless creativity” while writing that “her abilities allow her to combine complex music structures with the storytelling of Appalachian music.”
He also admits, her beyond-quirky songs aren’t for every listener. Still, he says, that’s no excuse to miss tonight’s show:
