When we caught up with the Relatives last March, they were about to play the opening weekend of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, a pretty significant moment for the West Dallas group. They performed older songs, and then they performed a new song, one that unfurled in heavy waves of psychedelic riff and muscled rhythm.

It was a hint at the sound of their debut album, The Electric Word, which was 40 years in the making, and follows up Heavy Light Records’ 2009 release of their previously unreleased material, Don’t Let Me Fall. The Jim Eno-produced album will be released on February 19 via Yep Roc, and here’s a taste of their appropriately psychedelic “Bad Trip.”
