December 31, 2006, found the band at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia, opening for friends and fellow rock gods the Drive-By Truckers. I’m fairly certain our Texas boys won the battle of the New Year’s covers, however, ending their set with a breathtaking rendition of Lionel Ritchie’s “All Night Long (All Night)” — complete with pedal steel, no less, courtesy of Athens, Georgia, resident and South San Gabriel member Matthew Stoessel. It’s seriously the best rendition of a Lionel Ritchie song we’ve ever heard. Hell, it’s the only good rendition of a Lionel Ritchie song we’ve ever heard (even by Lionel Ritchie). –Noah W. Bailey
