In this week’s paper, Doug Davis catches up with Autolux‘s Greg Edwards to talk about the shoegaze-y Los Anegeles-based band’s return to the spotlight with the recently released Transit Transit, the band’s sophomore release and its first after six full years of absence. It’s a fine release, Davis explains. But, at the same time, he warns the band’s fans from expecting the same old, rock-heavy song and dance:
Edwards, [drummer Carla] Azar and bassist Eugene Goreshter have released an album that provides some musical bridges back to Future Perfect but is much more sonically nuanced. Azar’s complex rhythmic signatures … are mixed with electronic beats and processed, recorded sounds (like the freezer door in Edward’s Copenhagen house), as all three performers share vocals. The songs that tie Transit Transit to Future Perfect (initial single “Supertoys” and “Census”) satisfy those craving the old sound. But it’s the disc’s more minimalist title track and closer, “The Science of Imaginary Solutions,” that is more likely to draw listeners in and keep them over time. Continue reading…
