The winning entry in the Re*Cov*Er mural competition Saturday night

Took the missus and the 4-year-old who lives in our house down to Deep Ellum Saturday evening, where I was among the 93 or so judges in the Re*Cov*Er mural series contest. Re*Cov*Er’s a project sponsored by the Deep Ellum Association and the Deep Ellum Foundation, and local artists were asked to re-cover — a-ha! — the sides of buildings, many of which used to house landmark joints (like, oh, Trees and the Green Room and Club Clearview). There were 16 entries, most devoted to musicians with significant local ties, from Leadbelly and Robert Johnson to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Carter Albrecht.

But the winner, which was also my favorite, was of a Deep Ellum street scene — circa, oh, 1993? (Loved, loved, loved the inclusion of The Met box). It was painted by Ronnie Bates, who works at Reel FX on Crowdus Street. (For the record, my kid’s favorite was the Dimebag Darrell painting; so … proud.) After the jump, you can see the muralists in action, as photographer by our good Friend Hal Samples, who apparently had to shoot Donal Logue‘s wedding Saturday night as well. –Robert Wilonsky
