Rooney is more than just an O.C.-guest-appearance-making, perfume-commercial-scoring powerpop group from L.A.–the band also has a local connection.

And no, I’m not referring to the band’s opening slots on Jonas Brothers and Kelly Clarkson tours.

Rather, as Darryl Smyers writes in this week’s print supplement to DC9, the title track of the band’s latest EP, Wild One, is an homage to the late Carter Albrecht. The song is written by drummer Ned Brower, who played in The Cosmetics with Albrecht while attending SMU a decade ago.

“I truly feel that Carter was one of the greatest artists,” says Brower in the article. “I wish more people would get to hear his music. If our record sends people his direction, that would be a great thing.”

We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If the Dallas Observer matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.

$30,000

The EP is only available at shows, so you can get your hands on a copy Sunday evening when the band plays at the Granada Theater with Talley Hall and Crash Kings. Tickets are $15 to $20. But the venue has provided five pairs of tickets to DC9 readers.

Each of the first five people to e-mail me with the subject “I’m A Terrible Person” will claim a pair. Be sure to include your first and last name.

Update: Contest over. Congrats to the winners.
