George Steel
George Steel just got here — if that. Just four months ago, he was introduced as the general director of the Dallas Opera, following his celebrated tenure as executive director of the Miller Theater at Columbia University. But long before his new home at the Winspear Opera House is scheduled to open — with a production of Verdi’s Otello — rumors abound that maybe Steel’s interested in retaking Manhattan to assume the open position with New York City Opera.
He says that’s not true, telling Bloomberg News, “I’m aware of the speculation that I’m a candidate. I’m not interested in the job at New York City Opera.” And Roger Horchow, for one, believes him. –Robert Wilonsky
