First the BCS pushes Texas into the also-ran category and now this. The 28th National Beef Cook-Off is asking home cooks to submit “Sonoma-style” recipes for this year’s contest.

That’s right, think simple, light and (above all) colorful…which can probably be achieved by carving thin slices of meat left to green in the sun.

The best of these soft-core recipes will be selected for (and the chosen home cooks asked to compete in) for a high stakes competition in Sonoma. Some $70,000 will be on the line, with a cool 25 grand going to the winner. One of the prizes includes paid registration and travel to the 2009 “Beef 101” seminar at Texas A&M.

You have until March 31 to figure out just what “Sonoma-style” beef means. We’re guessing it has something to do with slaughtering happy cows for their sirloin bits. More information here.
